Congress president Sonia Gandhi heli-hopped over this constituency campaigning for the first time for her candidature from here trying to negate the slander campaign heaped on her by the BJP.With just a day left for the end of campaigning, Sonia returned to Amethi, the "fiefdom" of her family, for the first time since filing her nomination.Having toured the area extensively in earlier times with Rajiv Gandhi, who once represented the seat in the Lok Sabha, Sonia seems to know the nerve of the people here. People strained their neck to listen to the Congress president in the jampacked maidan.

During her speech lasting more than fifteen minutes, Sonia Gandhi chose to touch upon almost all issues and charges levelled against her by the BJP. Flanked by daughter Priyanka, who has been stationed here campaigning on her behalf, and son Rahul, Sonia tells an attentive audience, "I need not tell you about my forefathers in the Gandhi family."

In her constituency, Sonia Gandhi addressed rallies at various other places including Salon and Jagdishpur besides one in neighbouring Sultanpur constituency where Deepa Kaul is the party nominee.
